over the past few months, lithuania’s mario basanov has been laying down some quality original and remix tracks, but nothing strikes quite like his remix of kaine‘s love saves the day, featuring disco singer-songwriter kathy diamond (known best for her past work with aeroplane, toby tobias, etc). i hate comparing artists but i can’t help but contrast the production of this tune with an airy balearic, tensnake-esque vibe from this track.
mario’s remix work keeps pointing to the fact that nobody envelopes this sound better than him — from the acute funky basslining to his bright and audibly colorful chord choices. this is one of those gems that tend to make good use of large sound systems… needs to be played loud to be fully appreciated. buy this while you’re at it, cause you’ll need it as every repeat gets dangerously louder.
Kaine ft. Kathy Diamond – Love Saves The Day (Mario Basanov Vocal Remake)

with two of our artists already charting on the beatport indie dance/nu disco top 100, we thank you for the continued support in our maiden voyage. make sure to peep us on beatport to support what you like if you like what you hear!
paying tribute to an iconic french house movement isn’t easy, no matter how late this post may come. an all glittery review was written out and ready to post months ago but unfortunately lost in a browser crash. lesson learnt, going to keep the posts shorter from here on in to put out more jammies. now allow me to share with you two tunes that got me into modern french house around ’05 (yes, even if there is no disco loop present, these two are still considered french house).

in the battle of the best summertime jammiez of 2010, the uk sends its best men forward, (who if you don’t know by now be) tom hammond and ben macklin… aka cassette club. the reigning 80s throwback act roaming the sorrow streets of the post-era romantic synthpop revival.
rickety moog basslines, stomping 4×4 beat, bright house pads, and far, far away vocals, preaching about soulful love and shattered dreams. it’s no secret the all seeing eye industries were the first to snag the duo *fistshake*
cassette club – 4 me (taken down)

one of the more deserving under-hyped acts, definitely. let’s change that– tweet twat with the duo, touch base on the myspace, and cop a single or two.
a true van she fanboy myself, i’m delighted to spread the know of michael di francesco’s solo alias arithmatix – unknown to many feel good connoisseurs, and not broken-in just yet. michael, an anolog junkie at heart, seems to have proven himself as a just remixer so far.
legend has it that michael’s true talent is derived from the power of a peculiar leather jacket which he dons every morning, after the early rays of sunlight gently kiss his eyelids, causing them to crack open in a mighty stare. he is also said to possess the awesome mastery of remixing. all of that to be debated later, check the tracks first.

word on the street is that michael has got his fingers glued to knobs and wires alongside fellow she-man matt van schie and the rest of the motley crew, producing van she‘s newest ep, due sometime within the next few months.
still playing catch up, this is a necessary-must-super-gotta-post-it, even if i am the last guy in the blogosphere to write up about flight facilities, just in case any of you missed the flight (hurr!) on this deep, rockin, smooth sailin, badass, all aussie yacht groove outfit.
smooth doesn’t cut it. suave can only compliment it. flight facilities sport the sound of the easy life and a loosened collar without sweat. rhodes. bass. slick vocals, and lyrics. true yacht virtuosity. have i lost it if i want to buy one of these and look like this?

what better way to wing the early winds of summer than this. it’s like drinking a shot of completely straight feel good. dig the wolfpack on juno download to grab a digital or vinyl copy of the release, and make sure to sho some thug luvin on flight facilities‘ twitter today!
yet again france has to go ahead and re-establish its grip on the indie dance scene. greedy, i say… almost not fair. nor is it fair to be completely crushed over a tune and find yourself easily falling to the merciless temptation of playing out a track until you’re totally sick of it… so far i’m on day 3
on the quest for musical conquest comes the french power pop/indie outfit pony pony run run as they push their latest single ‘walking on a line’ off of the label 3ème bureau. along with ‘walking on a line’ is a remix of legendary status by none other than the french house champion lifelike himself. this has got to be my favorite of 2010 as of yet
now this isn’t the usual lifelike makeover we have here… this is more like the perfect gateway tune for those appreciative of the indie pop rock sound but unable to handle it raw. what we have here is a high-octane cocktail of energetically charged, dreamlike melodies dancing to a fit beat and whispy, angelic vocals. that kind of gig… a real trip, the real deal. atmospheric. airy. ultimate indie dance interpretation. EPIC. only so many tunes sport such a surrealistic nature to them — this is one of ‘em

specially included is the extended mix if you’re a dj or just can’t get enough of the radio edit. also notable to mention is the walking on a line remix contest 3ème is running in partnership with mxp4. selected by the band, the contest winner will receive one totally unopened box of bragging rights to be included in the pony pony run run digital release with a secured spot on the b-side, an autographed vinyl, and 2 tickets to any chosen tour date. the contest runs until april 26th – so hurry up and inch in all you last minute speed producers

hot on the heels of new music, we’re in close pursuit of fresh stuff. fresh like all the fresh foods diving down the esophaguses of the poor young ladies in grum‘s new music video. after watching the flick (certain things need not be shared) let’s just say i dont think i’ll look be looking at girls and spaghetti+meatballs the same way for a little while

unfortunately i can’t share anything off of grum‘s new single, but can provide my favorite remix off the package in the streaming audio playa above. out of all the remixes, australia’s beaumont hit me best. something about the pads that play over the chorus is terribly addicting. i bet i’ll find at least a few of you hangin around here listening to this on repeat. no need to worry, the single+remixes release in just a month off of heartbeats. check the beatport for more

and in case this slipped past you, i think the grum remix of priors is an absolute essential if you loved the original of what you need, as well as this tv rock remix. always a sucker for some high energy music. make sure to show appropriate love to all artists involved if you like what you hear
now i don’t often indulge my passionate prog-house likings here on the blog much, but this gem is a tune that cannot go unshared. if you have a tongue for feel good taste, you’ll understand why i deviate for the sake of your musical exploration, from everything posted before this. claes rosén, sweden’s internationally renowned progressive house rockstar, and also part of (again, internationally renowned) melodic dubstep-kings l-wiz,allowed me to write up and share delirious from his latest EP out on nellie recordings.

not many artists tend to make good use of the portamento/pitch bend wheel these days. it’s a thing of the yesteryear, namely signature to the 80s funk era. slowly living its revival through funk’s homecoming, we can start to hear more artists use it in their basslines or lead elements. take a good listen to delirious, and you’ll deduce that claes is the master of pitchbend. as well as a polished, defined to the detail, bassline architect who unarguably always cakes his tunes with a rich layer of harmonic, melodic, somber but epic bells, synths and vocal shards. personal favorites and other notable remixes i can’t share on the blog but you need to youtube, are his dinka, flux capacitor, vinyl dharma, and kostas skretas remixes.
if you dig, stay on top and keep in touch via facebook here or buy him a cup of coffee here.
introducing a new feature here on french express: ”sounds like.” i don’t know how many times i’ll scour a blog i don’t trust yet to find a name or trigger word i like, especially the blogs with external links. can’t be arsed to download and check dat shhhiet only to delete it! it’s like the new lazy (you know it’s tru, homie bloggers… no audio players + no reference points means nobody but the indiana jones of blogginz will peep it). so to kick off this excellent game of catch up — i’ll review diamond cut‘s latest remixes like usual and test drive the “sounds like” feature at the end of the post.
it’s not unusual to fall in love with a sound. what is unusual (to me anyway) is to fall in love with a specific producer’s sound. how often does that happen? on my end, music has been sucking lately. just this past month, maybe because i came out of my cave or something, there has been a cataclysmic release of feel good, starting with diamond cut. ho man, what a guy. don’t get me started! he hooked me a long time ago (no homo, but i love him) especially even more so with his last two productions. unbiased unprofessional journalism right here YEA. so what, kiss my ass.

now when you hear the word diamond cut, you usually think of this. after listening to his starrset remix, you not only think but FEEL this. my mouth is open, because i’m anticipating imaginary wind. it’s truly an adrenaline rush. a rush like flooring a hayabusa against an f14 with full afterburners. just a side mention, i love 80s. but not all of it. i’m not normally for the flashdancier stuff, as much as i love that movie, i believe there should be only one song in history with that fast of a bpm (beats per minute/track speed). dc‘s remix is an exception. in the words of the man himself, both of these trax are “absolutely rockin.” make sure to check him out on myspace and follow up on twitter
*panic* where are the updates? french express, crash & burn? put down the brown paper bag… no need to fear, maine. we’re not throwing in the gloves just yet (as if you guys were even worried! i’m giving myself too much credit). for those of you that suck at reading, look at the title image. sly sums up what i’m about to say in just one kick ass, stone cold stare. or you can continue reading below.
dear loyalest followers, readers, and leechers. this is just a friendly announcement to let you know that i’ve been pretty busy lately. yes, this is the first post of its kind, but this IS a blog, right? I’ll put down the shades and unconventionally level with you all. I created FE summertime ’08 as it set sail to fill a wide void left open by all the ear-piercing justicey electro spawning everywhere, to provide a brand of polished feel-good unavailable elsewhere.
after coming full circle, i’m proud to announce that with all the heaps of contacts and unsigned talent i’ve met so far it would be a crying shame not to follow the golden string and launch french express as a registered recording collective, aka label, this may 1st. oh great – another blog label. WRONG! this is a collaborative movement of creatives from many different latitudes and longitudes, going far beyond just music. can’t give off too many details just yet, but we plan to strike your taste buds with a tiger uppercut.
thanks for the continued support! the blog will continue as is, with a side panel for everything label related. would love to hear your feedback.
what are your plans for saturday night? well, if you’re feelin like axxe, disco is the drug you need! while you’re gettin ready to go out, check this ill remix of axxe‘s s.a.t.u.r.d.a.y. night (no parallelism to the last post, pure coincidence. promise!) set up by neon workout.

axxe are somewhat new to the scene, having been together for only about a year now. however, they broke ground strong with their new 2-track ep including remixes by worship and neon workout. the neon workout remix really conjures up authentic italo disco feelings, thanks to the bassline and other noticeable undertones. watch out for more axxe in the future!
summer is no where in sight for those of us north of the equator. but thanks to great folks like matt van schie and gloves for gifting us with a warm breeze of air from the down under. matt van schie, not to be confused with michael van she aka michael di francesco aka arithmatix (identity crisis!!!), is the second half of van she tech who has also, as of late, started to also release under a solo alias. matt reassured that there are zero intentions of breaking van she apart. just more love givin. not much can be shared as to what’s in store just yet, but in the words of the man himself, big things planned!

australian ‘yacht pop’ is on the rise, and this nu-disco delight is a fine example of exactly how its done. gloves fancily redecorates the original tune with the blunt, familiar sound of the trademark fender j-bass usually used in most of his productions. definitely got me listening in circles! it looks like matt van schie, michael van she, and gloves are all destined for bigger things in 2010, so make sure to keep an eye out for all of them, as they are on the climb!
hailing from the uk is miguel campbell. the authoritative voice of funk out in leeds, alongside production partner matt hughes. combined, they make mam. miguel is no stranger to solo production. he runs his own label (outcross records) and has a special something when it comes to legit disco edits and sampling! here are two tracks he was kind enough to send our way

mysterious vybes is the bonus track off of matt’s “funk theory” ep. if there ever were a theme for nightdriving in a vintage porsche under a full moon in miami, this is it. kiss and tell is more upbeat and provides snappy funk in the classic definition of french house. i happen to really love the way miguel drops out the kick at unexpected times in this one. make sure to provide adequate love
instead of trying to tell you how awesome prick stick is, being rather short and sweet, and much of the quintessential french touch delicacy dipped in honeycombed funk, combined with shards of brass, slices of fender bass licks, milliseconds of motown-era teena marie, and all the other ingredients used to craft a masterful sandwich of disco house excellence, jettisoned from the very spacecraft of genre-reigning kings, daft punk themselves, i’ll just let you listen to it instead!

some tasty space-laced disco treats for you today. grab your helmet as we introduce you to fm attack, the definitive strider in the space-italo-disco-future-music genre. listening to fm is like taking a trip back into the 80s and hearing the future as we once envisioned it. his italo and deep flavored chord choices are mostly due to his authentic vintage setup and deep house influences which are audibly present in his music. just a warning, these tracks are catchy. we’re able to share 3 highly intoxicating tunes — namely a single dubbed yesterday, a pnau remix, and an edwin van cleef remix
